How do I use the Personalized Diagnostic Tool, and how long does it take?

Our Personalized Diagnostic Tool is a skin + fragrance analysis that you can take online here. The questionnaire takes approximately two minutes to complete, and you’ll get your results right away.

What skin types do your products work for, and which skin concerns do you address?

The Body Lab products are designed for all skin types. Your customized formula recommendations will be targeted to your specific skin concerns, which may include helping with moisturization, hydration, brightening, calming irritation, firming, anti-aging, softening, smoothing, cleansing or clarifying.

Do your products work for dry skin? What about combination or oily skin?

Yes and yes. Our body care formulas are specifically formulated to work for a wide variety of skin types. Based on your skin + fragrance analysis data, we’ll custom-recommend the perfect match for your skin. If you experience dryness or oiliness in certain spots across your body but a majority of your body has no issues, select one of the combination skin options in the Personalized Diagnostic Tool.

Why do you ask for my zip code?

Your skin is the barrier to all outside elements such as the sun, air pollution, and even the type of water you shower with. Understanding these factors will help us better understand your environment.

Do I have to do the skin + fragrance analysis before choosing my formulas?

We recommend using our Personalized Diagnostic Tool to get the best results. Knowing more about your skin biology and skin concerns helps us provide you with the most effective and personalized recommendations. Our interactive fragrance experience allows you to choose your own fragrance or get custom fragrance recommendations based on your preferred experience.

How often should I update my skin + fragrance analysis?

You can use our Personalized Diagnostic Tool any time to update your customized recommendations. We suggest updating your answers if your skin concerns or environment changes, or if you want to change your fragrance. Our interactive fragrance experience allows you to choose your own fragrance or get custom fragrance recommendations based on your preferred experience.

HOW IT WORKS

How do I know which body care bases are right for me, and how does the fragrance customization work?

Using 20+ data points in our two-minute skin + fragrance analysis, we’re able to accurately assess your body care needs – and customize formulas to address them. From moisturizing to age-defying to soothing or smoothing, we have a body wash and body lotion base to meet your needs. Plus, you can personalize your formula by choosing your own fragrance! We offer eight unique fragrance doses that range from bold and energizing to calm and soothing to create your personalized scent. Or if you can’t decide which fragrances to choose, our Personalized Diagnostic Tool can provide personalized fragrance recommendations.

What should I buy to ensure I have everything I need?

Your complete body care routine will include two bases (body wash and body lotion) and up to four fragrance doses (unless you prefer fragrance free products).

What are the two blank rectangles on my bottles?

Good catch! On the side of our body wash and body lotion bottles, we’ve left two rectangles blank. It’s to help you remember your personalized fragrance once you’ve recycled your dose packaging. After you unbox your fragrance doses, simply remove the peel-off image labels from the fragrance doses and add them to your base bottles so you remember which scents you used.

How do I mix my body wash and body lotion with the fragrance doses?

Easy! Open up to two fragrance doses for each base, and pour the desired amount into the base bottle. Ensure the body wash or body lotion cap is tightly closed, and shake well for 30 seconds. Shake hard enough that you can hear the body wash or body lotion sloshing around in the bottle. If you’re not sure it’s fully mixed, give it a few more shakes for good measure.

Please note that adding two fragrances to your body wash or body lotion may thin out the product temporarily, but it should set and thicken back up after 24 hours. You might also notice some foaming when adding and shaking in the fragrance doses to your body wash, but this should subside after 24 hours.

What color should the fragrance doses be?

Our fragrance doses range in color from clear to light yellow. That’s because we don’t add any dyes or colorants to our doses, so the hue you see reflects the inherent, natural color of the ingredients. Please note: over time, some fragrances may change the color of the body wash and body lotion to a pink or orange tone. Rest assured this is normal and should not impact product performance.

Do I have to use the same fragrance doses in both my body wash and body lotion?

You’re the mixologist! Feel free to personalize each base with your preferred fragrance experience.

What happens if I want to use more than two fragrance doses in my body wash or body lotion?

We do not recommend using more than two fragrance doses in one body wash or body lotion base. Using more than two will thin out the product and reduce stability, causing product separation over time.

Do I have to use two different fragrance doses in each base?

We recommend two different doses for a full fragrance experience. For a single-note fragrance, you may add two of the same fragrance doses for a stronger scent or one fragrance dose for a lighter scent.

I prefer a lighter scent. Do I have to use a full fragrance dose?

You’re the mixologist! For a balanced scent, mix in the full dose. For a lighter scent, mix in half the dose.

I prefer fragrance free products. Do I have to add fragrance doses to my body wash or body lotion?

All of our body washes and body lotions are fragrance free. Our fragrance doses enable you to personalize your The Body Lab body wash and body lotion with a scent you love. If you prefer fragrance free formulas, feel free to skip the fragrance doses and use your custom-recommended body wash and body lotion.

My fragrance is too subtle. What should I do?

If you only added a partial fragrance dose or one fragrance dose, continue adding up to two full fragrance doses of your choice to your base to make the scent stronger. However, we do not recommend using more than two full fragrance doses in one body wash or body lotion base. Using more than two will thin out the product and reduce stability, causing product separation over time.

My fragrance is too strong. What should I do?

If you’re smelling a fragrance dose directly from its vial, it will smell quite strong because it is a concentrated product that is intended to be mixed into your body wash or body lotion. After mixing, it shouldn’t be too overpowering. If you prefer a lighter scent or are concerned about it being too strong, start with half a fragrance dose and you can add more until your desired scent is achieved.

Can I apply a fragrance dose directly to my body?

Our fragrance doses are not intended for direct contact with the skin, as they are specially designed to be mixed into The Body Lab base products. While they are clinically tested to be safe to use in our base products, they have not been tested or approved for use alone.

Can I use fragrance doses in other personal care products?

Our fragrance doses are optimized to provide best results when added to The Body Lab body washes and body lotions only. Our doses have not been tested for efficacy or stability in other brands of body wash or body lotion, or in other types of personal care products such as hair care.

Do I need to shake my body wash or body lotion every time I use it?

If you’ve shaken both well when you added your doses, there’s no need to shake with every use. Though we applaud your enthusiasm!

How should I store The Body Lab products?

All of our products have been formulated to withstand the warm temperatures and humidity of an average bathroom environment. 

What’s the shelf life after opening and mixing my body care?

Adding up to two fragrance doses will not affect the stability of your formulas, and they won’t separate after being mixed well. Rest assured, The Body Lab products will remain stable for at least two years after customizing with your recommended fragrance doses.

How long does it take to see results?

Great question! The short answer is: It varies for everyone. Some custom’ers notice a difference immediately while others have seen changes over three to four weeks. On average, we recommend using your new body care routine consistently for at least two weeks to see results.

Do you use "clean" ingredients?

We take you and the planet seriously. That’s why we’re serious about clean beauty. All products are sulfate-free, paraben-free, phthalate-free, mineral oil-free and cruelty-free. Good for you so you can feel good about using them too.

Are your products vegan?

We strive to provide our custom’ers with the most efficacious products, using the most effective ingredients, and in some cases vegan alternatives are not available. However, we are committed to selecting ethically sourced ingredients, always. We recommend that you please check the ingredient list on the label, or on our website, to see if the product you’re purchasing contains any animal-derived ingredients.

Are your products cruelty-free?

Yes, all of our products are cruelty-free. The Body Lab does not and has no plans to conduct any animal testing.

Are your products tested on animals?

The Body Lab does not and has no plans to conduct any animal testing. None of our products are tested on animals and no animal testing is done on our behalf by our ingredient suppliers.

Can I use The Body Lab if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

There are no specific restrictions for using our products when pregnant or breastfeeding. However, we always recommend consulting your doctor or medical provider with questions or concerns while you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can all ages use your products?

Our products are not designed for children. All of our formulas have been clinically tested to be non-irritating and non-sensitizing, and we’ve conducted studies on adults (human volunteers, of course). However, parents should consult their pediatrician with any questions or concerns about which personal care products are safe to use on their children.

Do you have fragrance free options?

Yes! All of our body washes and body lotions are fragrance free. For those that prefer fragrance free products, we suggest using your recommended body wash and body lotion without adding any fragrance doses.

Are your products sulfate-free?

Yes, all of our products are sulfate-free. Sulfates like SLES and SLES are commonly used for their cleansing properties, but they can be harsh on skin. That’s why we selected alternative cleansing ingredients to ensure our products are safe for all skin types.

Are your products dye-free?

Yes, all of our products are dye-free.

Are your products gluten-free?

Our formulations are gluten free, except for two products that may contain traces of gluten: the Calming Body Wash and Calming Body Lotion. They contain colloidal oatmeal that may be processed in facilities that also process wheat ingredients. Please check the ingredient list on the label or on our website, or share the ingredient list with your doctor or medical provider, to see if the product you’re purchasing is suitable for your use.

Are your products nut-free?

All of our formulations are peanut-free, but we use shea oil (Moisturizing Body Wash) and shea butter (Moisturizing Body Lotion, Calming Body Lotion). Please check the ingredient list on the label or on our website, or share the ingredient list with your dermatologist or medical provider, to see if the product you’re purchasing is suitable for your use.

Are your products safe for sensitive skin?

All of our formulations have been clinically tested to be non-irritating, non-sensitizing and safe for sensitive skin. If you have a known sensitivity, please check the ingredient list on the label or on our website, or share the ingredient list with your doctor or medical provider, to see if the product you’re purchasing is suitable for your use.

Do your products help with medical conditions?

No, The Body Lab does not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and our Personalized Diagnostic Tool is not intended to stand in for your doctor or other medical provider. Please reach out to your doctor or medical provider with any questions about diagnosis or prescription products.

Do your products include SPF?

No, none of our products contain SPF. We recommend applying your favorite SPF as the final step of your body care routine. Please note: our Smoothing and Anti-Aging formulas contain lactic acid which may increase sensitivity to the sun, so it is especially important to limit sun exposure and protect skin when using these products.

How big are your bottles?

Our body washes contain 19 fluid ounces, our body lotions contain 11 fluid ounces, and each fragrance dose vial contains 0.2 fluid ounces. Our bottles have a larger capacity than the fill amount to leave exactly enough room to accommodate your custom-recommended fragrance doses.

Is your packaging recyclable?

Because we believe in less waste, our bottles are made with 25% PCR and our fragrance dose boxes are made with Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)-certified materials and are recyclable. Because there can be considerable variations, depending on where you live, please check your local curbside recycling program.

TheBodyLab.com offers free standard shipping on orders over $26, and recurring subscription orders will receive free shipping on orders above $20. Otherwise, standard shipping is $5 and expedited shipping is available for an additional cost.

Orders placed on TheBodyLab.com ship within four business days via standard shipping. Expedited shipping is available for an additional cost.

The Body Lab is obsessed with providing personalized body care regimens you love. If you are not happy with your first order from TheBodyLab.com within 30 days, you can return your products for a refund (less $5 for shipping on the original order). Please note that subscription refills are non-refundable, and purchases made from retailers may only be returned through the place of purchase.

What if I don't like my fragrance?

We’re sorry to hear that your personalized fragrance selection was not what you expected. We recommend trying a different combination next time. To help you make the right choice, all of our fragrance dose boxes have scratch-and-sniff labels if you’re able to shop in store. And, try our Personalized Diagnostic Tool – it will help you find a fragrance that aligns with your preferred shower experience.
